Literacy Circles

For the next few weeks the Kiwi Reading Group is learning how to take part in literacy circles.
A literacy circle is when a group of students that are reading the same book meet and discuss the book.
A way to enable to students to gain deeper understanding of a story.
Enhancing literacy circles:
- Students having different roles/tasks to complete
- Having group discussions
- Blogging each task/role and allowing others to add their own opinions to comments posted
- Video conferencing with other classes reading the same book

We are reading 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs' by Jon Scieszka.
We are learning to do the role of character describer.
- Describe the main characters
- This means describing their personality, looks, likes and dislikes.
- What impact do they have on the story?

Have a read of our tasks...
Post comments or question to provoke deeper understanding of the text.

before I read the defendant testifies I thought that the wolf was a very bad wolf. But he really is a very nice wolf with a nice house living with his dear old Granny. he had a bad cold so he blew the first two little pigs house down but the third little pig was very clever and built a very stable house so the wolf could notblow the nice house down like the other two little pigs.

Instead of being really really really mean he is actually rather nice.
Except when he eats the pigs

before I read the other story of the 3 little pigs I thought that the wolf was actually a mean wolf and blew the houses down on purpose, but I actually found out that the wolf was a calm, patient, nice and kind fellow, and he could not help it if he had to eat the pigs. I think that the wolf has brown eyes, brown fur, white teeth and sharp claws. The wolf likes to eat bunnies pig and sheep, but he does not like other people saying mean things about his granny and he also does not like to be rude. The wolf was a nice person but he had a negative impact on the story like, eating the little pigs.

everybody thinks that the wolf in in the three litle pigs story is mean and mischevious but nobodys heard the real story. The wolf is actully quite nice he was getting some sugar for his granny`s birth day cake.He had a terrible cold at the time and had a big sneeze he went to a first pigs house for some sugar his house was made of straw he felt a sneze coming and snezed the house down when the dust had cleared he saw the pig dead on the foor so he ate him up then he went to the second pigs house then he felt a sneze coming and snezed the house down when the dust had cleared he saw the second pig dead like his brother then he went to the third pigs house and he said go away the wolf got angry and got sent to jail so thats the real story.

before I read the three little pigs and the big wolf I thought that the three little pigs ran into the smart pigs home so they were safe but they weren't but when I read the proper storie it was quite different because the wolf was baking a cake but he didn't have any sugar so he went to go to his neighbours to see if they had any sugar but all the three little pigs wouldn't let him in.

In the story of The Three Little Pigs:
Why do you think the writer chose a Wolf to be the bad guy?

room15 kids said...

hi anonymous
i think they chose the wolf because alot of people think wolves are big bad and mean but maybe some are not!

After I read defendant testifies then I knew that the wolf was very nice wolf. I thought the wolf was bad when I hadn't read the defendant testifies. I have a question for Mark why was he rather nice?

room15 kids said...

the first time I read the three little pigs I thought the big bad wolf was mean and scary but when i heard the wolfs story he's not such a bad fellow prety calm like eshter said,
and he also told his real name and he likes it better than the
BIG BAD WOLF his name is Alexander.T.

in the story Alexander.T.(the wolf just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar and then the wolf had a cold and felt a snezze coming though and AACCHOOOO the house fell down the little pigs died of fear then there was a nice roast pig on the ground of the house and he just happened to eat up the little pigs

even though Alexander(the wolf)was prety nice I thought he had a negativeinpact on the story

Mark said...

(im answering my question)He is nice because he likes his grandma, is ploite, caring (except when he eats the 'dead as a doornob pigs')
he is unlikely to eat meat and just wants a cup of sugar.

My dear friends, have you ever read the wolf and the three little pigs?
Well,I have and the first time I read it I thought the wolf was mean and scary!!!
But,the second time I read it (the
wolf's story)I found that he had feelings, because in that story all he wanted was a cup of suger, and the pigs wouldn't let him.He was just making a cake for his dear old granny!
so I guess he wasn't so bad hiself,JUST LIKE ELLA SAID!!!!

i like the new story of the wolf better than the old one.the other oun just wasn't interesting enough, and anyway it was a lie.i think the wolf has big beautiful brown eyes, creamy brown soft fur,a pitch black nose, white beautiful teeth and filed nails.he is a kind wolf.

A few of you have suggested that the Wolf had a negative impact on the story, why do you think this?

Esther said...

I thought that the wolf did not like to be rude because he looks after his granny and diid not say anything mean

Now I think that the wolf should not have been put in jail because it was just because of the wolfs nature, and it kind of should have been the pigs fault for not making their house stable and not trusting the good wolf to let them in to their house to give them a cup of sugar. But it was all part of the food chain.
